The Modern Relics Collection

The Modern Relics Collection

For the rogues, the rockers and the eclectic youth subcultures of the 70s, Soho’s Carnaby Street has long been the melting pot of London’s most vibrant movements. Since 1972 The Great Frog has stood at the heart of this rebellion, established just around the corner on Ganton Street at the hands of Paterson Riley and Carol Lehtonen-Riley. Forged by the city’s mavericks and misfits.

The Modern Relics collection by Cutler and Gross X The Great Frog draws on the experimentation of the 70s and bohemian travels afar, inspired by heritage jewellery and the spirit of trailblazers of the era.

It’s a celebration of clash and character, of late nights that ease into early mornings, of style as protest and a love letter to simpler times. Each of the six sunglass styles nods to what Cutler and Gross and The Great Frog were founded on—unapologetic design, rooted in rebellion.

“This collection is a homage to the spirit of the early 70s, where anything goes and experimentation is key."

- Reino Lehtonen-Riley, Creative Director and Owner, The Great Frog

Melded in Metalwork

Handcrafted in sterling silver and semi-precious metals, The Great Frog jewellery carries the spirit and edge of 70s counterculture into present day as a modern relic in each of the six sunglass styles. From delicate feather-detailed rings to lustrous onyx cabochons, semi-precious stones and baroque-style engravings.

Each talisman forged in their storied workshop blends decades of craftsmanship with rebellion, inspired by years past and journeys travelled. Jewellery designed to feel like an inherited heirloom and intended to live through generations to come.

"We’ve mixed bold twists on timeless silhouettes with contemporary designs, drawing on The Great Frog’s back catalogue of silversmithing and Cutler and Gross’s flair for expertly crafting frames, alongside modern Japanese titanium.”

- Reino Lehtonen-Riley, Creative Director and Owner, The Great Frog

Hot in the City

Los Angeles brings a cinematic heat to the latest Cutler and Gross X The Great Frog campaign. With sun-soaked streets and hard shadows cast from the Hollywood sign, the day is still warm and somewhere in the city a rebellion awaits...

Rock legend Billy Idol and LA-based singer Staz Lindes move through The City of Angels like partners in crime, with punk co-conspirators lurking beyond. Without looking back, their eyes are shielded behind tinted lenses from the new Modern Relics collection. Each style telling an illicit story, where titanium sunglasses are both their armour and their accomplice.

With fists full of skull rings and necks dripping in pendants, the two rogues stake out in a gritty motel, hidden away from onlookers. Uncertainty lingers, where the duo look as if they’re freshly returned from running riot, or ready to make their next move in the night—caught on camera are escapades we’ll never know.
