Modern Relics: The Details

Modern Relics: The Details

For over 55 years Cutler and Gross has taken pride in the art of eyewear, exploring intricacies in design and improvements in architecture, all while keeping our expansive heritage at the forefront of everything we do.

Eyewear Architecture

Sunglass styles feature design details that are considered, from advancements in hinge movement and temple designs that are as beautiful as they are functional, to the lightness of pure titanium.

Frames from the Cutler and Gross X The Great Frog Modern Relics collection leave the atelier in Japan knowing rest assured, careful attention has been paid to every detail, at initial idea conception by our Creative Director followed through to the final finishing touches passed by hands of our skilled artisans.

Acetate Blinders

Cutler and Gross is proud to introduce new lens blinders on the Triumph and Paisley Sunglass styles of the Modern Relics collection, designed in collaboration with The Great Frog. Delicately coloured acetate rims the lenses for added definition.

ZEISS Lenses

Inspired by bohemian travels afar, the Modern Relics collection channels the experimental era of the 1970s. Each of the six sunglass styles features ZEISS UVA and UVB lenses, for optimal visibility with ethereal gradients, jewel-tone and tinted lenses.

Acetate Brow Bar

A standout feature of the collection, and new to Cutler and Gross design cues—the Capri Sunglass features an innovative design. The navigator silhouette offers a mixed material brow bar of pure Japanese titanium with a TGF logo inlay in coloured acetate.

Heritage Jewellery

Each frame is embellished with The Great Frog’s anarchic iconography in Sterling Silver. The Great Frog Creative Director, Reino Lehtonen-Riley, hand carves the initial emblems and whittles them into wax. From there, they’re shaped into a mould and cast in solid 925 Sterling Silver by a jeweller in Vicenza, Italy. The polished emblems are embedded into the frames, which are handcrafted in pure titanium in our atelier in Sabae, Japan.

Blurring the boundaries between the sacred and profane, three styles take it one step further, gilded with emblems that are cast in Sterling Silver and plated in gleaming 24K Gold. These limited-edition frames are available in highly exclusive numbers.

Bones and Skull

A memento mori rendered in precious metal, Cutler and Gross elevates The Great Frog's iconic skull iconography to the realm of eyewear. The herald Bones and Skull motif found throughout their jewellery collections is translated into the temples of the Capri, Paterson, Ganton and Carol Sunglass styles.

Onyx Stone

The Great Frog's Onyx detailing is found with an almost ceremonial gravitas. The cabochon stone catches the light along the temples of the Limited-Edition Triumph Sunglass, forged in handcrafted Sterling Silver and inspired by the original design of the London jeweller’s bestselling and archival Feather ring.

Lock Down Chain

A motif threaded throughout The Great Frog’s jewellery collection, the Lock Down chain is a delicate yet commanding design. Influenced by original bracelets and necklaces, the pattern is found engraved onto the rim wire of the Paisley and Ganton Sunglass styles, adding a discreet nod to the jeweller’s signature metalwork.
