Ancient Roots

Natural volcanic glass, Obsidian forms when molten lava rapidly cools. The result is a jet-black lustrous rock sometimes streaked with silver. Its etymology stems from the Roman explorer Obsidius, who allegedly first discovered it in Ethiopia. The storied material can be traced back to Palaeolithic times, when it was used to make arrowheads, tools, and mirrors.

As well as its practical properties, Obsidian was also revered in ancient cultures for its metaphysical energy. In divination it was referred to as the ‘stone of truth’ that cut through illusions and lies and offered protection.

The Details

A smooth pebble of Obsidian formed the starting point for the collection. Alessandro Marcer, Cutler and Gross’s Creative Director, became enthralled by the majesty of the rock. He sought to translate its impenetrably dark colouring into Cutler and Gross’s design language.

Extensive prototypes were developed to create an acetate with unique depth. The theme continued through to the metalwork, which required an intricate galvanic technique to realise a striking blackened effect. Marcer then selected key frames from the Cutler and Gross archive to be reworked through this darkened lens. A subtle mark of significance, the sunglasses and glasses are inscribed with a unique Obsius logo on the inner temple.

The results take the classic black frame into a new realm. Discover the collection online and in-store now.
