The Autumn Winter 24 collection draws inspiration from the iconic snapshots of Los Angeles in the 70s. Seven new silhouettes come to light. The sunglasses and opticals are defined by maximalist profiles and exquisite details that reflect the allure of this bygone era.
The Story
The 1970s was a transformative and turbulent decade for Hollywood. It witnessed the emergence of the Blockbuster Era with the release of Jaws, Star Wars, and Rocky, and experienced the intensifying presence of the paparazzo.
This, coupled with the notorious parties and excessive lifestyles, propelled the obsession with celebrities. An obsession that photographer Ron Galella both captured and contributed to. And one that enthralled our co-founder Mr Tony Gross.
“The style and stories from LA in the 70s
are fascinating and alluring in
equal measures.”
Creative Director, Cutler and Gross
To escape the cameras, luminaries would don large face-shielding sunglasses and slip away to hideaways like Chateau Marmont – an establishment with discretion written in the walls.
This formed the starting point for the latest collection. Grounded in our five-decade-deep archive, it draws upon the whispered stories that emerged from LA’s capacious landscape and acknowledges the tension between public and private personas.
The Collection
Seven new silhouettes enter the repertoire this season. The blocky 1413 and 1414 frames are introduced alongside the perfectly round 1412 Cutler and Gross sunglasses. Cat-eyes take shape in the 1417 opticals and 9317 sunglasses, which feature a swooping browline and emphatic facets.
Two Limited Edition Cutler and Gross sunglasses come to light in the form of the 1412 and 9891. The frames are handcrafted from crystal acetate with gradient blue lenses that nod to LA’s light-drenched cityscape. 18K Rose Gold plates the pins, core wire and hinges.
Each season, our in-house Colour Studio curates a capsule of frames from a finite sheet of acetate that will never be reissued. Burnt Sunset is the latest addition. The smoky, pigmented hue is presented in the form of the 9317 cat-eye sunglasses and extravagant 9891 oversized sunglasses.
The Campaign
To capture the mood of the collection, we called upon internationally acclaimed photographer Frederic Auerbach. The Swis-born, LA-based creator is renowned for his sensational shots of Hollywood's elite, including the likes of Zendaya, Jude Law, and Sharon Stone.
Behind the wheel of a 356 Speedster, our protagonists roll through the sun-baked LA hills. Their eyes are veiled behind cosmic sunglasses as they wind past Chateau Marmont to reach their hideaway.
As the sun sets, the cityscape glows with neon lights. The luminescent scene is reflected and magnified in the expansive glass walls in which the campaign is set. Concealed from flashing cameras and prying perspectives, the night begins to unfold for our two protagonists...
