Martyn Bal launches collaboration with Cutler and Gross

By Sam Mohammadi

We are happy to introduce you to the wildly quirky Wowzers frame resulting from our first collaboration with Dutch designer Martyn Bal.

Bal has a varied and impressive design background, beginning in 2000 when he was hired by Hedi Slimane at Christian Dior. Under Slimane’s wing, Bal embarked on a journey to transform Dior Homme into the leading brand it is today. In 2005, Bal accepted a position as Design Consultant for Gianni Versace. Soon after he was hired as Design Director for menswear by Burberry. Here he was given creative responsibility for the Burberry Prorsum men’s collection, cementing his love affair with London and menswear.

Now Creative Director of his own namesake brand, Bal was delighted to collaborate with us on his first foray into eyewear. Staying true to his sharp design aesthetic, Bal “aimed for the glasses to be cool, neat and sharp by embracing all things sexy and streamlined.”

Four colour options are available: Ink Dream, Crystal, Brown Veneer and Black Dream, designed to emulate wafts of hazy, dreamy smoke. Bal believes that, like clothes, “eyewear should hold up a mirror to inner strength.” The round eye shape and bold temples of the Wowzers incorporate elements from signature Cutler and Gross models, reflecting Martyn’s design approach, which is ultimately about redefining classic elements without being controversial.”
